Why is Kevin Costner no longer in Yellowstone?

Then the second half of Yellowstone season five premieres tonight, the episodes won’t feature one main character: Kevin Costner’s John Dutton.

Although it remains to be seen how Taylor Sheridan Costner will write off the show (aside from Sheridan saying “I don’t do fuck-you car accidents,” referring to Patrick Dempsey’s death Grey’s anatomy character), the decision as to why Costner isn’t there Yellowstone more was reportedly his own.

“I wanted to contact you and let you know after a year and a half of work Horizon and do all things that are necessary, and think about them Yellowstonethat beloved series that I love, that I know you love, I just realized that I won’t be able to continue Season 5B or beyond,” Costner said in June. He added: ‘It was something that really changed me. I loved it. And I know you loved it. And I just wanted to let you know that I’m not coming back and that I love the relationship that we’ve been able to develop and seeing you in the movies.”

Horizon refers to his film series (part one premiered last spring, part two has been postponed, and part three is reportedly still in the works). Costner initially declined to participate Yellowstone season five, part two, about reported scheduling conflicts with Horizon. “We rarely started when we said we would and we rarely finished when we said we would,” he said GQ in May 2024. “And I was okay with that. I really was. I was okay with it, but for me it wasn’t a trend that could continue.” According to Costner, he tried to make it work, but “the scripts never came”.

A spokesperson for Paramount Network said: “Kevin played a big role in it Yellowstone‘s success. While we had hoped to continue working with him, unfortunately we couldn’t find a window that worked for him, all the other talent, and our production needs to move forward together. We respect that Kevin has prioritized his new film series and wish him the best.”

Last year, Sheridan told the Hollywood reporter“My opinion of Kevin as an actor has not changed… His creation of John Dutton is symbolic and powerful… and I have never had a problem with Kevin that he and I couldn’t work it out on the phone. But As lawyers Once you get involved, people can stop talking to each other and start saying things that aren’t true and trying to pass the blame based on how the press or the public seems to react and I don’t know of anyone deserves. His film seems to be a big priority for him and he wants the focus I really hope the movie is worth it – and that it’s a good movie.” He added: ‘I’m disappointed. It curtails the closure of his character. It doesn’t change it, but it curtails it.’

Costner said GQ any possible return to the Yellowstone-verse is between him and Sheridan. “Taylor and I know what the terms are for coming back, and I’ll keep that between us,” he said. “And if we can’t get to it, it’s because it’s ultimately unreasonable for them or something.”

Despite everything, Costner said he still enjoys playing John Dutton: “I love that character. I love that world. I’m a very script-oriented person. And now if the scripts aren’t there, I need to know what to do doing.” I want to make sure that the character also reflects what is important to me. And that’s again an issue between Taylor and myself. Don’t know.
