Trump offers Rep. Elise Stefanik appointed ambassador for a post at the United Nations: report

According to a report, President-elect Donald Trump has tapped New York GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik for the position of U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

Trump offered Stefanik the gig late Sunday, a source familiar with the assignment told CNN.

The apparent offer follows earlier reports that Trump was looking to the powerful chairman of the House Republican Conference for the gig.

Stefanik reportedly caught the future president’s attention with her aggressive defense of his policies.

Her departure from the House of Representatives would trigger a special election within 90 days to fill the open state seat she leaves behind. Her replacement would likely go to another Republican, given the reliably red district she represents.

This is a breaking story. Check back later for updates.
