Four things to know about Jalen Hurts’ performance against Cowboys

It wasn’t an easy game to grade Jalen Hurts, but there are some things to know about his uneven performance against the Dallas Cowboys in a 34-6 win.

First, the Eagles won the game and the quarterback is now 41-19 in his three-plus years as a starter.

“I’ve asked the question before, rhetorically,” he said. “I said: when did winning not become the most important thing? That is exactly what this is all about: everyone is together in this, everyone understands the mission, understands the vision of what we are trying to achieve as a team.”

Hurts was referring mainly to the defense, and how he walked down the line on the bench, hitting hands and helmets with players on that side of the ball. They backed him after Hurts’ fumble that the Cowboys recovered on Philly’s 6-yard line, looking to take a 10–7 lead with a touchdown. It didn’t happen because Jalen Carter made a huge stop on a third-down running play that lost two yards, forcing Dallas to settle for a field goal after wasting good field position.

Second, Hurts has no problem admitting his mistakes. Would it have been better to have a cleaner game? Naturally. However, the quarterback went four straight games without a turnover, the first time he’s ever done that. However, mistakes sometimes happen when handling the ball on every play.

“I don’t have any pride or anything to do with admitting my mistakes, so I made a mistake and it hurt the team, but I was grateful that the defense had my back, how they reacted and how they played,” he said. “Just the conversations that we have, and I think that’s something that starts in the middle of the week, not on Sunday.

“We know it needs all of us. Everybody knows offensively that we’re going to keep pushing and keep moving forward, stay with it and keep throwing punches. That’s exactly how I think we handled it.”

Third, Hurts is a unique quarterback in that he truly lives for the next play, able to quickly put a bad play behind him and not dwell on it. It is sometimes said that skills make a good cornerback a great cornerback. On Sunday, Hurts went from bad to better and then good in the same game.

“I thought he did a lot of good things,” head coach Nick Sirianni said. “Obviously it didn’t start the way we wanted it to start, but there’s something to be said for guys who can rebound and have a really good game after things don’t go well in the beginning.

“We want some of those plays back. He wants some of those plays back. But it’s great work to deal with adversity, keep his head down and keep working.”

Finally, Hurts completed 14 of 20 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns with 56 yards rushing and two touchdowns in the win. That gives him 16 touchdowns to just two turnovers in this five-game winning streak.

In addition, Hurts became the first quarterback in team history with 23 games with at least one passing and one rushing history.

As Maximus said in the movie Gladiator: “Aren’t you entertained?”

About that figure. Mine would be a solid B.
