Why Chargers will beat Titans, why they won’t, and a prediction

The Los Angeles Chargers can’t afford to suffer a fallout from the visiting Tennessee Titans in Week 10.

After all, Jim Harbaugh’s Chargers have gradually gotten healthier and have started rolling since Week 5, winning three of their last four outings — with the exception of just a two-point loss.

However, the Titans visitors are perfect trap material as first-year head coach Brian Callahan struggles to reshape an entire program. That has shown on the field with the 2-6 record and the quarterback shuffling.

Here are a few key factors that explain why the Chargers may or may not win on Sunday.

The Titans are a wounded mess. Sunday will be their first game without new starters on both sides of the ball (offensive lineman Lloyd Cushenberry and safety Quandre Diggs). Quarterback Will Levis is back, but that could work in the Chargers’ favor considering he has thrown five scores and seven picks this year and is averaging 5.6 yards per attempt. He has thrown more than one touchdown just once this season. And while the Titans are statistically good on defense, they have put up 34 and 52 points in two of their last three games. The Chargers, meanwhile, boast the league’s best defense, allowing an average of fewer than 13 points per game. Justin Herbert’s offense has expanded alongside the improved health of his ankle and also the weapons around him.

There is always the element of surprise and the unknown. Maybe they’ll roll out some looks for Levis that the Chargers haven’t seen on film yet. Jeffery Simmons is also a game-changing player at the heart of the Titans defense, so if this continues to be a low-scoring affair, he can certainly make a few plays that could change the outcome.

The Chargers can stay home for this and are simply the better team by most metrics. While the Titans have struggled to reach a minus 11 point differential, the Chargers are well on the other side at plus nine. There is also a big difference in quarterback play. If the Chargers weren’t exactly phased by going to Cleveland last week and playing with Myles Garrett in an informal 27-10 win, they won’t have much trouble against the struggling Titans.

Final score: Chargers 27, Titans 13
