Trump names South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem as secretary of homeland security in the new administration

According to reports, Donald Trump will announce South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem as his next secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

The 52-year-old former vice presidential hopeful will lead the agency as Trump moves to crack down on immigration, two sources told CNN Monday night.

The congressman will oversee a $60 billion budget and thousands of employees at federal agencies ranging from U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement to the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Secret Service.

It follows the new appointment of Tom Homan, the former acting director of ICE, as the president-elect’s “border czar.” Trump also announced the appointment of immigration hardliner Steve Miller as his new deputy chief of staff for policy in the White House.

Noem’s alleged appointment comes as Trump continues to fill top positions in his new administration after winning re-election last week in the 2024 presidential election.

The Republican candidate crossed the 270-vote threshold in the Electoral College early on Wednesday, after clinching a number of must-win swing states.

Susie Wiles, co-chair of the Trump campaign, was appointed the new White House chief of staff.

Trump has also picked former New York Rep. Lee Zeldin to take charge of the Environmental Protection Agency, in what is expected to see a major reshuffle.
