South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem has reportedly been appointed Secretary of Homeland Security by Trump

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem has been selected by President-elect Donald Trump to be the next secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, sources confirmed to CNN.

Trump’s decision to pick Noem appears to be in line with his pledge to crack down on illegal immigration, after he added Stephen Miller as deputy chief of staff for policy and Tom Homan as border czar to his Cabinet on Monday.

The Department of Homeland Security is responsible for border protection, immigration disaster relief, and the U.S. Secret Service, among other things.

Noem, once seen as a possible running mate for Trump, faced widespread backlash in April when she wrote in her memoir about shooting and killing an “untrainable” dog.

She wrote that she told the story to show that she was willing to do something “hard, messy and ugly” if she had to.

In May, Noem was banned from more tribal areas in South Dakota for comments she made earlier this year about tribal leaders profiting from drug cartels.

She publicly alleged that tribal leaders engaged in drug cartels on their reservations while neglecting the needs of children and the poor.

The governor is currently serving her second four-year term after being re-elected in 2022.
