Injury care for Jayson Tatum? Celtics star weighs in

The bumps and bruises of an NBA season have hit Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum hard over the past two games.

Tatum suffered a sprained left ankle on Sunday on a Giannis Antetokounmpo closeout, making him questionable for Tuesday night’s NBA Cup game against the Atlanta Hawks. Tatum played, but he aggravated the injury late in Boston’s stunning 117-116 loss to the Hawks at TD Garden.

Tatum crossed the area with 4:29 left in the fourth quarter after hitting Larry Nance Jr. had blocked around the edge. Tatum landed on Nance’s foot and hopped around in pain for a moment before walking onto the field and playing the rest of the game.

The five-time All-Star was clearly bothered by the injury, but he assured everyone he wouldn’t miss a single moment.

β€œYes, I’m going to play (Wednesday),” Tatum told reporters, according to NBC Sports Boston, as the Celtics were set to face the Brooklyn Nets on the second night of the back-to-back. ‘It’s a bit sensitive. There were only two minutes left to play, so I just had to keep going.”

The Celtics may have different ideas about playing Tatum, especially how he looked after landing on Nance’s foot. Tatum moved gingerly around the court and played cautiously as he took just one shot β€” a 3-pointer into the wide-open corner with Boson trailing by a point in the final seconds β€” and missed the final stretch. He also made sales.

Tatum finished with 20 points on inefficient 5-of-16 shooting from the field, including hitting just 2 of 9 3-pointers. He also contributed eight assists and six rebounds in 37 minutes.

Tatum doesn’t like to sit out games and will certainly do everything he can to be on the floor against the Nets. But with it being so early in the season, the Celtics may have to take that decision out of his hands this time.
