Ex-Celtics fan favorite misses unlikely shot due to injury

Time stood still for former Boston Celtics center Robert Williams III as he made his long-awaited season debut with the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday night.

Williams took the court against the Minnesota Timberwolves in a 127–102 loss to the Trail Blazers and finished with 13 points, three rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.

Williams, as he normally does, was on a high, but it wasn’t because of a brutal alley-oop finish or a vicious blockade in the stands. Instead, it came as Williams fired off an improbable shot in his first competitive action in more than a year.

Williams took a pass from Scoot Henderson and made a three-pointer from the cornerwhich earned him the first triple of his six-year NBA career in the 2018 first round with the Celtics. The shot came as a surprise, as Williams was known more for his skills around the hoop when he was with Boston, but he has clearly been working on his offensive range. He attempted just four three-pointers in five seasons with the Celtics.

Just playing again was a victory for Williams, who has had a bumpy road since the Celtics traded him to the Trail Blazers for Jrue Holiday prior to last season along with Malcolm Brogdon. Williams played just six games last season before tearing a ligament in his right knee that required surgical repair and this season got off to a delayed start for the 6-foot-4, 237-pound rim protector when he suffered a Grade 1 injury. hamstring strain.

Williams will certainly look to stay healthy and provide the Trail Blazers with more highlights as the season progresses. Just don’t count on them coming from beyond the arc.
