Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra spoils Tyler Herro’s big performance

Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra may want to use Tuesday’s game against the Detroit Pistons as an amnesia contest.

Spoelstra called a timeout when the team did not have a timeout, which is a technical foul. The Pistons took advantage by making two free throws and won 123-121.

It’s the ultimate twist of a script. Spoelstra went from designing a genius play against the Minnesota Timberwolves to making a mental mistake against the Pistons.

Tyler Herro had the most remarkable performance of the season and the end of the game left a bitter taste in everyone’s mouth.

Herro finished with 40 points, eight assists, four steals and 10 threes in one game.

An emotional Spoelstra spoke after the match about Herro’s performance.

“Tyler was just sensational,” Spoelstra said. “You don’t want it to come down to a mental mistake like that. You just wish this would double overtime. In games like that, I felt like I deserved to play double overtime without anyone getting in the way. Unfortunately, you know, even as an experienced coach, I got in the way of that.”

It’s unusual for Spoelstra to make such a blunder, especially in his 17th year as coach. But mistakes can happen to anyone, whether you are an experienced or inexperienced coach.

The Heat have Thursday off. On Friday night, the Heat will face the Indiana Pacers in the second game of the season tournament.
