When is the next supermoon: date, time for Colorado

With so much ‘night’ in the sky at this time of year, you might as well look for wonders to behold in the early darkness.

On Friday you can do just that when the last supermoon of the year appears.

This is called the Beaver Moon and the name is derived from cultural folklore.

This is the time of year when beavers prepare for winter by cozying up in their dens. According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, it was also a peak time for beaver trapping during the fur trade era due to the animals’ thick fur.

What is a supermoon?

A supermoon occurs when a full moon orbits particularly close to Earth in its elliptical orbit, according to NASA’s website.

The moon is not actually bigger, but it can appear 14% larger and 30% brighter compared to the faintest moon when it is farthest away.

Supermoons occur three or four times a year and always consecutively, NASA’s website says.

When is the next supermoon?

The Beaver Moon rises on Friday, November 15.

The moon rises along Colorado’s Front Range just after 4:20 p.m. Then look for the supermoon in the northeastern sky.

What will the weather be like in Colorado for the Beaver Moon?

Skies are expected to be clear across the Front Range on Friday evening, with daytime highs in the 50s or 60s while lows fall into the low 30s, the National Weather Service says.

In the mountains and on the western slope, the sky may be partly cloudy.
