Three Studs, Three Duds of Celtics stars set tone in win over Nets

The Boston Celtics had the best recipe to avoid losing back-to-back games against the Brooklyn Nets for the first time this season on Wednesday evening.

The Celtics leaned on their two stars in Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, something the Nets couldn’t match.

The dynamic duo combined to score 60 points and set the tone for the Celtics, who ran away with a 139-114 win over the Nets at Barclays Center. It was Boston’s second win over Brooklyn in less than a week, as the Celtics improved to 10-3 with their highest scoring output of the season.

Here are three studs and three duds from the Celtics winning on the second night of a back-to-back:

STUDS
Jayson Tatum
Neither the Nets’ defense nor Tatum’s injured ankle, which he adjusted late against the Hawks, stood in the way of the five-time All-Star putting in a great performance. Tatum led Boston’s offensive attack as he scored a game-high 36 points on 12-for-19 shooting. He also added ten assists and nine rebounds, just shy of a triple-double.

Tatum knocked down five of six shots from beyond the arc in the game, but what was more impressive was his finishing around the rim. A few times, Tatum evaded defenders or absorbed contact before converting an acrobatic layup.

Jaylen Brown
It wasn’t Brown’s most efficient performance, but he still played a role in leading the way for the Celtics with a steady performance. Brown scored 24 points on 8-for-19 shooting and secured his second double-double of the season by grabbing 12 rebounds.

Brown’s ball handling was central to Boston’s loss to the Hawks as he committed six turnovers. Brown was much improved in that area against the Nets, as he wasn’t charged with any turnovers.

Payton Pritchard
Pritchard not only made his usual number of three-pointers. The fifth-year guard filled out the stat sheet heavily. Pritchard made five shots from beyond the arc and finished with 23 points off the bench in 36 minutes. For good measure, he also added eight assists, six rebounds, two steals and one block. It’s performances like these that make Pritchard a real contender in the race for the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year.

DUDS
The first quarter begins
Slow starts have been a bad habit for the Celtics lately, and they failed to break that trend against the Nets. Boston let Brooklyn dictate the game with its energy from the opening tip and the Nets raced to a 26-13 lead with 3:52 left in the first quarter. It was the third time in four games that the Celtics trailed by double digits in the opening frame. The Celtics have more than enough firepower to cover those deficits, but they really shouldn’t fall into those kinds of holes so early and so often.

Dirk White
It was an unusual evening for White. The standout guard committed three turnovers in the first quarter and also got into trouble early, picking up three fouls in five minutes. The foul trouble caused Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla to bench White for the remainder of the half, making him a complete non-factor as Boston fought back. White, who finished with just nine points on 3-for-11 shooting, did have one highlight roller block on a Ziaire Williams dunk attempt in the third quarter, but that didn’t wash away his poor first half.

Nets fourth quarter
The pesky Nets stuck with the Celtics for most of the three quarters, but unlike last week, Brooklyn couldn’t hang in the final frame. Boston showed it could reach another level that the Nets couldn’t by outscoring Brooklyn 36-25 in the fourth quarter. The Nets’ poor performance in the stanza in front of their home crowd kept them from perhaps stealing a win away from the Celtics.
