Wembanyama’s explosive career night broke a ridiculous number of records

That scout should thank his lucky stars that ESPN’s Tim Bontemps is an honest journalist who would never reveal his sources. The claim that Victor Wembanyama has no influence on the attacking part of the pitch could go down as one of the worst sports of all time. The Spurs defeated the Washington Wizards 139-130, following the French phenom’s 50-point career night.

The way the points came was the opposite of the way most experts shouted. It shows that there is more than one way to be dominant in today’s NBA. You don’t have to stand under the basket just because you’re over 7 feet tall, and the Wizards learned that firsthand.

You can argue about whether Wemby is somewhere between 6-foot-1 and 6-foot-1, but what isn’t up for debate is the shooting touch he has at that size. There has never been a player in the history of the league with this skill. The Alien displayed just about every skill you can possess in the game of basketball en route to a 50-piece at the expense of compatriots Bilal Coulibaly and Alex Sarr.

The Wizards did the Spurs fans justice by keeping the game close. In the first quarter it looked like the Silver and Black would run away with it. To Washington’s credit, they fought back and kept it close enough for Vic to light up the scoreboard, prompting a flurry of tweets about the records he broke while raining eight threes at the Frost Bank Center.

Okay, you get it. Let’s put youth aside and look at what he has done compared to all players, regardless of age. He even added six rebounds, three blocks and two assists to the performance. The absurdity persists.

The player who struggled to find his shot in the first eight games of the season cannot lead San Antonio back to the postseason. The Hooper who just put on the best shooting show you’ve ever seen from a 7-foot can, he absolutely can. He won’t hit six three-pointers every night, but he doesn’t have to. He has found his rhythm, which means he can hurt opponents anywhere.

He’s started using his midrange weapons more as the floor has opened up for him since the rest of the players have been shooting so well. That, combined with his own shooting ability, makes the Spurs offense a nightmare for defenses.

When Jeremy Sochan returns, he will have more space to get to the basket, grab offensive rebounds and wreak havoc – that’s his specialty. Tre Jones will add another steady playmaker that the Spurs can rely on to create shots and defend at a high level.

If you look around the Western Conference, there are a lot of good teams, but they are also flawed. No one is perfect, and Spurs, with Wembanyama playing like an absolute beast, can claw their way to relevance.
