The satirical publication The Onion said it purchased Alex Jones’ Infowars at a bankruptcy auction for an undisclosed price, with the support of the Connecticut families of eight Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims and one first responder.

Jones owes the families more than $1 billion in defamation for calling the massacre a hoax. In a statement from their lawyers, the families said the purchase “puts an end to the disinformation machine that Jones used for years to discredit the families and victims.”

The purchase was confirmed by conspiracy theorist Jones, who posted a video on X saying that The Onion had bought his company. “The Connecticut Democrats at Onion newspaper bought us,” he said in the post, describing the bidding as “competitive.”

The statement from the Sandy Hook families said the purchase includes Infowars’ intellectual property, including its website, customer lists and inventory, as well as some social media accounts and production equipment that Jones used to broadcast his shows.

“The Connecticut families agreed to forgo a portion of their recovery to increase its overall value The onion‘s bid, making its success possible,” the statement said.

What will The Onion do with Infowars?

In a statement on social media site BlueSky, Ben Collins, CEO of The Onion, said his company has plans for Infowars.

“We plan to make this a very funny, very silly website. We’ve enlisted the services of some Onion and Clickhole Hall of Famers to make this happen. I can’t wait to show you what we’ve got invented,” he wrote. .
