De Ui buys InfoWars | Fortune

InfoWars has a new owner – and it’s probably not who anyone expected.

The onionthe satirical news site that includes “CIA Realizes It’s Been Using Black Highlighter All These Years” and “Kitten Thinks About Nothing But Murder All Day” has acquired the Alex Jones-founded website about conspiracy theories and more. And in a twist that seems ripped from the site’s own headlines, the families of the Sandy Hook school shooting victims helped broker the deal.

A statement from the lawyer for eight families affected by the tragedy said those parents had “agreed to forgo part of their recovery in order to increase the overall value of their assets.” The onion‘s bid’, which allowed the bid to succeed. The purchase price of InfoWars was not disclosed.

The onion plans to relaunch InfoWars in January as a parody of Jones and other online personalities spreading misinformation. Next to the InfoWars website, The onion now controls the production studio and nutritional supplement business from which Jones made millions.

In a satirical post written by the fictional owner, The onion wrote about the purchase, saying: “No price would be too high for such an abundance of malleable possessions and minds. And yet, by chance, a formidable interest group has outsmarted the hapless owner InfoWars (a forgettable man with an already forgotten name) and forced him to sell it for a steep bargain: less than a trillion dollars.

The actual CEO of The onion‘s parent company told the New York Times. “We thought this would be a hilarious joke. This will be our answer to this world without guardrails, where there are no gatekeepers and everything is kind of crazy.”

Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending gun violence, will advertise on a relaunched version of the site.

Jones was forced to sell his site after parents of Sandy Hook victims sued him after he spread the claim that the shooting never happened. In 2022, they were awarded $1.4 billion in damages.

Families were concerned that Jones’ associates or fans would buy it InfoWars and keep Jones on the air as host, with regular broadcasts.
