Cozy Vibes is on the rise for 2025, according to Zillow

Although 2024 seemed to fly by, a new year is just around the corner, with a wave of exciting interior design trends to explore. The most charming homes are those that express personal style rather than copying what is currently popular (only to end up looking dated very quickly). However, if you’re looking to freshen up your space, Zillow just unveiled its 2025 Home Trends Report. According to the real estate platform, the coming year will mainly be about an inviting atmosphere.

“A home is not just a checklist of practical features; it’s a feeling,” says Amanda Pendleton, Zillow’s expert on home trends. “Homeowners and buyers today are looking to the past to create a sense of warmth, character and comfort in even the most high-tech environments.”

At the top of the list of interior design trends to look at is a cozy, lived-in atmosphere. “Buyers are embracing small space living not only for affordability and sustainability; they choose the coziness of a smaller home,” says Pendleton, who adds that the number of “cozy” listings has increased 35 percent since last year. “In today’s uncertain world with a lot of stress, people are looking for warmth and comfort at home.”

Of course there is no one way to keep it fun. Pendleton says textured walls, layered lighting and plenty of candles are a great way to add a homey touch, but she also mentions that old-world charm is about to make a comeback. In fact, she says, listings mentioning “vintage” accents are up nine percent, while home libraries are up 22 percent.

“Younger generations are nostalgic not only for millennial fashion and Barbie, but also for a simpler time in their lives, when home was a place of comfort and safety,” Pendleton explains. “They may associate positive memories with their childhood home or their grandparents’ home, and they want to recreate those feelings in their own space through more traditional design.”

Or, if your idea of home comfort leans toward the luxury of a five-star hotel, you’ll be happy to know that properties with spa-like “wet bathrooms” have seen a 19 percent increase.

“This waterproof shower bathtub enclosure may be difficult to recreate without a complete renovation, but anyone can add spa-inspired accents to their bathroom,” she says. “You can add a rain shower, replace colorful towels or paint with soothing shades of light blue, green or white, or add plants to create a zen-like space.”

Zillow predicts homes will embrace a comforting reminder, but a few modern touches are emerging. Most notably, Zillow saw an increase in listings with solar panels (18 percent), drought-resistant turf (14 percent) and electric vehicle chargers (22 percent). Additionally, a whopping 86 percent of potential homebuyers are looking for a home with some form of climate resilience, whether it be seismic retrofits or water collection systems. After all, a mix of old and new elements lays the foundation for a future dream home.
