Some Democratic lawmakers have criticized former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard after President-elect Donald Trump appointed her as director of national intelligence, a Cabinet-level position.

Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va., stated in a post on X that she was “shocked” by Gabbard’s selection for the role.

“Not only is she ill-prepared and unqualified, but she also traffics in conspiracy theories and rubs shoulders with dictators like Bashar-al-Assad and Vladimir Putin,” Spanberger claimed in a post on X.

Rep. Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla., called Gabbard’s choice as DNI “incredibly reckless,” stating in a tweet: “Putting someone with known sympathies in front of foreign adversaries does not put American interests first – it compromises our security in danger. “

Rep. Seth Magaziner, DR.I., seemed to suggest that having Gabbard as DNI would compromise national secrets.

“Tulsi Gabbard’s deep ties to some of our country’s most dangerous adversaries, including Syria’s Bashar al-Assad and Russia’s Vladimir Putin, make her an untrustworthy guardian of our country’s most closely guarded secrets,” Magaziner wrote in the statement.

“As the top intelligence official in the federal government, she would have access to information covering everything from our nation’s nuclear weapons program to the location and activities of our military service members, and we cannot risk this information falling into the hands of our adversaries.” , he claimed.

Gabbard served as a Democrat in the US House of Representatives from early 2013 to early 2021. She made a presidential bid in 2019 but ultimately dropped out in 2020 and endorsed Joe Biden.

The former lawmaker endorsed Trump during the 2024 election and announced she would join the Republican Party.

“I have been a soldier for over 21 years and currently serve as a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve,” she wrote in a post on Veterans Day this week.
