Greece vs England LIVE: Team news and line-ups as Harry Kane was on the bench for a must-see Nations League match

Lee Carsley is yet to speak to Thomas Tuchel about the England squad

England travel to Greece tonight for a must-win match in the Nations League. After defeat at Wembley against the same opponents, the Three Lions must prevail in Athens if they hope to automatically qualify for promotion.

Interim boss Lee Carsley will take charge of the national team for his final camp and will be hoping for a positive end to his time in charge of the senior squad.

Carsley has already made a number of debuts to his name during his time in charge and could give another chance to six uncapped members of the squad, including Curtis Jones, Lewis Hall and Taylor Harwood-Bellis.

With quite a few players, including Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka, withdrawing due to injury, expect a somewhat unfamiliar line-up for tonight’s match, with the defense and midfield in particular being shaken up.

England on the road

England are unbeaten in their last seven away games (W5 D2), their longest ever run since twelve games in a row between March 2013 and October 2015 under Roy Hodgson.

Three Lions have fond memories of Greece

England have won against Greece on all four of their previous trips by an aggregate score of 9-1, but only had a better winning percentage away from home against Luxembourg (5/5).

Greece has the longest active winning run of any European country in all competitions (five matches) and could win six consecutive matches for the first time in November 2013.

Can Greece win again?

Greece remained winless in their first nine meetings with England in all competitions (D2 L7) before winning 2-1 at Wembley last month.

The only teams to beat the Three Lions twice in the same calendar year are Wales in 1936, Italy in 1973, Belgium in 2018 and Hungary in 2022.

Carsley benched Kane again

“For the second time, Lee Carsley has fielded a team without Harry Kane against Greece.

“This time, however, by choice: while Kane criticized the players who stayed away, he showed up and was rewarded with a place on the bench.

“A penny for his thoughts at this time.”

Anthony Gordon reveals all about failed Chelsea transfer: ‘It was pretty close, to be honest’

Anthony Gordon has revealed he was “desperate” to play for Thomas Tuchel when the next England manager tried to sign him in 2022 and he cannot wait to work with him on international duty.

Gordon eventually joined Newcastle in January 2023, four months after Chelsea sacked Tuchel, and the 23-year-old made 10 appearances for England under Gareth Southgate and Lee Carsley.

England team changes

Lee Carsley makes eight changes to the team that started last England match against Finland.

The players left are Kyle Walker, March Guehi and Jude Bellingham.

Jordan Pickford returns in goal while Ezri Konsa and Rico Lewis fill in the rest of the defense. In midfield, Curtis Jones starts alongside Conor Gallagher in the guard roles with Anthony Gordon and Noni Madueke on the flanks.

Ollie Watkins starts up front in what is undoubtedly the biggest talking point, while Harry Kane starts the match on the bench.

Gordon on his near move to Chelsea

“It was quite close to be honest,” Gordon said of his possible move from Everton to Chelsea. “I wanted to go at the time and especially work with him (Thomas Tuchel). I felt like my style would match his playing style, the way he played at Chelsea, which was very exciting for me.

“It didn’t happen in the end. It was a great opportunity for me that ultimately did not materialize and I look forward to working with him a few years later.”

Gordon on the defeat of Greece

Anthony Gordon says England want revenge on Greece after their defeat at Wembley.

Speaking before the match, he said: “I think in the England national team we don’t feel like we have to lose any game. If we lose a game like that, we want to get some revenge and prove that we can beat them.

“With the players we have we felt we should have won at Wembley but we underperformed and didn’t take our chances and now we have another chance to do that.”
