Pomona teen killed while battling wildfires

Dariel Vasquez, an assistant with the New York State Parks Department, was just 18 years old when he died while volunteering with park rangers to extinguish a forest fire in Greenwood Lake on Saturday.

According to the New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Department, Vasquez was killed by a fallen tree on November 9 while volunteering with the Wildland Fire Crew to extinguish a forest fire in Sterling Forest.

Vasquez was a 2024 graduate of Ramapo High School and while there he was named captain of the varsity baseball team where he played for four years and was named the Spring 2024 Rockland County Senior Male Athlete.

By Monday morning, Vasquez’s family had raised more than $51,000 to cover funeral costs and a vigil was held at noon Monday at Ramapo High School’s baseball field.

The Hudson Valley wildfires continue to grow

Several wildfires have developed in the Lower Hudson Valley following extended periods of dry and windy weather.

At least three wildfires have hit the area in the past three weeks, including the ongoing Jennings Creek fire in Sterling Forest, which grew to more than 3,500 acres Tuesday morning and is threatening 10 properties in Orange County and New Jersey.

The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for possible wildfires in the Lower Hudson Valley on Tuesday, November 12 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. due to continued dry, windy conditions in the region. And Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties remain under a temporary burn ban thanks to several wildfires that have developed in the region since late October.
