A living legend, nearly two decades removed from his last professional fight, returns to the ring this Friday as 58-year-old Mike Tyson tries to prove he’s still one of the baddest men alive. His opponent is 27-year-old social media superstar Jake Paul. It’s a fight like we’ve never seen before.

Anyone unfamiliar with these fighters would think that the man thirty years younger would have a huge advantage. After all, there has to be a reason Tyson hasn’t fought in almost two decades, right? Despite the age difference, many people support Tyson in this fight. The reputation he built during his heyday makes him seem unbeatable to some, even as he approaches his sixties.

Where does Mike Tyson come from?

Tyson was born on June 30, 1966 in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, New York. His family bounced around Tyson’s childhood a bit. They lived in Bedford-Stuyvesant until Tyson was 10 years old, before financial burdens forced the family to move to Brownsville. Despite the constant change of scenery, Tyson and his family never left the New York City area.

When did Mike Tyson start boxing?

Although it is unclear exactly when Tyson started boxing, he dominated as an amateur before turning pro at the age of 18. As an amateur, Tyson won gold medals at the Junior Olympics in 1981, defeating Joe Cortez, and in 1982, defeating Kelton Brown.

Tyson turned pro in 1986 at the age of 18. Tyson made his professional debut on March 6, 1985, where he defeated Hector Mercedes via TKO in the first round. On February 16, 1986, Tyson entered the boxing spotlight after defeating Jesse Ferguson on national television.

When did Tyson become champion?

His first heavyweight title came after a second-round TKO victory over Trevor Berbick, which gave him the WBC title and made him the youngest champion (20 years, 4 months) in history. To this day, he remains the youngest person ever to hold a heavyweight title.

Tyson would go on to win several other heavyweight championships, becoming the first person in history to hold the WBA, WBC and IBF titles simultaneously. Tyson was unbeatable in his early days, erupting to a 37-0 start to his professional career with 33 of those wins coming by knockout.

Has Tyson ever lost?

Tyson’s first defeat was an upset at the hands of Buster Douglas on February 11, 1990. That defeat is still considered one of the greatest upsets in sports history. After losing to Douglas, Tyson won eight straight fights before losing back-to-back fights to Evander Holyfield via TKO in the 11th round on November 9, 1996 and via disqualification on June 28, 1997.

That second fight occurred when Tyson infamously bit Holyfield’s ear twice, earning him the disqualification. Tyson only fought ten more times after that fight. He went 5-3 with two no-contests in those matches.

Tyson’s arrest

Tyson was arrested in July 1991 for the rape of 18-year-old Desiree Washington. He was convicted on February 10, 1992.

Tyson was released on parole after serving less than three years of what should have been a six-year prison sentence. Tyson fought and won four matches in his return before facing Holyfield.

When was Mike Tyson’s last fight?

Tyson’s last professional fight took place on May 11, 2005. Tyson was defeated by Kevin McBride via TKO in the sixth round.

Since then, Tyson has only competed in exhibitions, most recently an eight-round bout in November 2020 against former four-division world champion Roy Jones Jr.. Although the fight lasted all eight rounds and was declared a draw, many people watching watched the fight believes Tyson was the superior fighter.
