Broken chair trophy returned for Husker volleyball game against Minnesota

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – It’s a sports tradition now celebrating its 10th year, with more than $175,000 raised for charities, but this time there’s a twist.

After launching online in 2014, the famous Bits or Broken Chair trophy is presented each year to the winner of the Nebraska-Minnesota football game.

But if you look at the schedule, the Huskers and Gophers are not playing on the field this year. That’s why the trophy will make its way to the Devaney Center volleyball court on Thursday evening.

Since 2017, the base between the two teams has also been a means of fundraising, with each fanbase raising money for their respective charities.

Here in Nebraska, those donations go to the Team Jack Foundation, which raises money for pediatric brain cancer research.

Lindsey Nemetz, marketing director for the foundation, said childhood brain cancer is one of the leading causes of death in children, and Nebraska ranks seventh nationally in cases.

“The Team Jack Foundation was created because nothing but generous Nebraskans donated to charity,” Nemetz said. “Really, we got through it because of people who started fundraisers, like the broken chair fundraiser.”

On the Minnesota side, the Team One Four Fund raised money for M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis.
