Ariana Grande has sparked a debate over the ‘Wicked’ lyrics

CNN

Ariana Grande wants to correct a popular inaccuracy about a text in the hit Broadway musical ‘Wicked’.

Grande plays a Glinda, later known as the Good Witch in “The Wizard of Oz,” in the big-screen adaptation of the musical. She and co-star Cynthia Erivo, who plays fellow witch Elphaba, have generated a lot of press for their new film.

The film’s official social media accounts recently shared a lyric video of Grande’s performance of the song “Popular” in the film.

“I’ll teach you the right balance when talking to boys,” the caption read, but Grande corrected them.

“They are “tricks”!!!!!! I love you @wickedmovie,” she wrote in the comments of the Instagram post.

That sparked a debate among commentators about whether it’s “balance” or “tricks.”

“I had to look this up because it means I have been singing the wrong lyrics for over 20 years and in some places it is listed as “poise” and in some places it says “ploys” but apparently the original CD booklet said “ploys ?? ???” one person wrote on X.

Grande isn’t singing solo here.

Jennafer Newberry Peery and Ginna Claire Mason, who both played Glinda in stage productions, agreed with the singer.

“Just another Glinda here to say…. right tricks,” Peery wrote on social media, while Mason replied: “The lyrics say balance, but they are good tricks.”

‘Wicked’ will be released in cinemas on November 22.
