Snubs & Surprises at the 2024 Latin Grammy Awards

As we digest the wins and losses of the 2024 Latin Grammys — from Shakira’s first overlooked album in seven years to Juan Luis Guerra’s “MAMBO 23” winning record of the year, beating Karol G’s “Mi Ex Tenía Razón” and Kali Uchis defeated and Peso Pluma’s “Igual Que Un Ángel” – it is safe to say that the top categories did not go as expected. Or maybe?

Year after year it becomes more difficult to predict who will win the top categories, which makes all the victories even more surprising or shocking. In the aforementioned categories, neither Guerra nor Drexler – both super honored by the Latin Recording Academy – were the clear winners.

Perhaps the only two categories that went as expected on Thursday (November 14) were Songwriter of the Year and Producer of the Year. Mexican-American hitmaker Edgar Barrera, a clear frontrunner in both categories, won those two categories. Even Carín León won the new category of best contemporary Mexican music albums Boca Chueca, vol. 1 went as predicted. Even though it’s a big name, Peso Pluma’s album is in that category Genesiswas from last year, and he got out Exodo this year, although it missed the nomination deadline.

At this year’s Latin Grammys, Juan Luis Guerra was the night’s top winner, winning a total of four awards, including album of the year for Radio Guiraand record of the year for “Mambo 23.” For the same productions he also won the best merengue and/or bachata album and the best tropical song respectively. Colombian singer-songwriter Ela Taubert won best new artist, and Edgar Barrera and Nathy Peluso each won three awards. Karol G, a big winner at last year’s awards ceremony, took home one award (out of her eight nominations) for Mañana Será Bonito (Bichota season)which won best música urbana album.
