‘Cobra Kai’ makers tease Kwon and Tory in Barcelona: ‘Karate high-jinks follow’

It looks like Miyagi-Do captain Robby Keene (Tanner Buchanan) may have more to worry about than earning points on the mat when Cobra Kai season 6 returns on November 15.

In the first five episodes of the final season, Robby and his fellow Miyagi-Do students trained for the prestigious Sekai Taikai tournament, but when they arrived in Barcelona, they discovered that Tory (Peyton List) had defected to the Cobra Kai- dojo, led by “No Mercy” duo John Kreese (Martin Kove) and Kim Da-Eun (Alicia Hannah-Kim).

That’s bad news for Miagyi-Do senseis Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), but it could be even worse news for Robby and Tory’s romantic relationship. Fans of the duo weren’t happy with the brief shot in the Season 6 Part 2 trailer of Kwon (Brandon H. Lee) with his arm around Tory — and they might have reason to worry. “With Robby and Tory in a negative spot, that opens up an opportunity for Kwon to dive in there,” said Hayden Schlossberg, who Cobra Kai with Jon Hurwitz and Josh Heald.

The Big 3 have surrendered Entertainment weekly with some additional teases about the new episodes, including what’s to come for Tory and Robby, those “next-level karate battles” in the Sekai Taikai, and Daniel’s search for the truth about Mr. Miyagi.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: In a recent preview clip, we met Zara (Rayna Vallandingham) and Axel (Patrick Luwis) of the Iron Dragons. Tell us a little about how Zara and Axel will play in part two.

JON HURWITZ: The Iron Dragons are another of the dojos in the Sekai Taikai, and you will quickly see that they are a force to be reckoned with. It is a dojo based in Hong Kong, with the best students from all over the world. Many dojos are representative of different countries, but this dojo has a slightly more international feel. They have been very successful in the Sekai Taikai for quite some time. They are led by Lewis Tan’s Sensei Wolf, who is a force in his own right.

We’ve had this rivalry between Cobra Kai and Miyagi-Do for so long, but now you’re on the world stage. There will be other dojos, and the Iron Dragons are just the tip of the iceberg of dojos our competitors have to worry about.

From the little bit we see of him in the trailer, Sensei Wolf appears to be from the “No Mercy” school.

JOSH HEALD: Their sensei is a three-time former champion of the Sekai Taikai and a powerful figure in the international martial arts community. You’ll see early on that Sensei Wolf takes more of a page out of someone like Kreese’s book than someone like Daniel, in terms of his approach to leadership and the way he demands the best from his students. But (his method) has also worked, and his dojo has dominated and he has attracted the greatest talent. We compared them to some kind of dynasty, like a New England Patriots under (Bill) Belichick and (Tom) Brady. There’s something in the special sauce that makes them work, but it also might not be the most emotionally healthy.

Tory-Robby shippers went crazy over a shot in the trailer that appears to show Kwon and Tori canoodling. What can you tell us about that?

HAYDEN SCHLOSSBERG: Karate high jinks arise when you go abroad. (Laughs) You take a bunch of teenagers and put them in Barcelona for a karate tournament, and they’re all in a hotel – different relationships start to form. I don’t want to say too much about what’s going to happen, but there’s always drama coming off the mat. I think with Robby and Tory in a negative spot, Kwon will get a chance to swoop in there. We’ll see how that unfolds, but be prepared for a little bit of that standard drama.

Looking at what we see in the trailer, the Sekai Taikai matches look crazy – especially what’s happening with the elevated platform.

HURWITZ: It’s so much fun. In the writers’ room, it was important for us to come up with next-level karate fights, matches that differentiated this from what you’ve seen at the All Valley. We came up with this idea for this platform fight and didn’t know if we could make it happen because we have the budget for a 22-minute comedy. So everything we do in the stunt world means we’re already stretching ourselves in important ways.

But we met up with our producer in Atlanta, Bob Wilson, and we walked through the Eastern, the location where we were filming. He looks up and says, ‘It’s a concert venue. There have been platforms in this place that were lowered from the ceiling. Maybe we can do what we want to do.” I’m not going to go into the details of that fight, but as Mike Barnes said in part one, the Sekai Taikai is a dangerous place, and our fighters are being put in positions of a lot higher danger than they’ve faced before .

In the fifth episode, Daniel was stunned to find the bloodstained headband of Mr. Miyagi of the Sekai Taikai. Give us a little taste of where this storyline is going.

HEALTHY: We never drop a storyline, so that mystery is followed. Daniel is someone who is very curious and will ask anyone deep questions to see where that could lead him. Explosive things happen when he digs a little further than perhaps he should.

All five episodes of Cobra Kai Season 6, Part 2 premieres Friday, November 15 on Netflix.
