Does a SCOTUS case give a green light to OSDE initiatives?

How far does the 2022 United States Supreme Court case go? Kennedy vs. Bremerton describe what religious activities can take place in public schools?

FOX 25 investigated the case after State Superintendent Ryan Walters (R-Okla.) cited the ruling Tuesday in announcing the Oklahoma State Department of Education’s Office of Religious Liberty and Patriotism.

The case revolved around Joe Kennedy, a football coach in Washington state. The Bremerton School District said he was prohibited from praying on the football field after games. However, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Kennedy.

“Oddly enough, it’s the same school district I went to,” said attorney AJ Ferate, who represented Kennedy.

According to Ferate, the ruling applies to all neighborhoods and all religious backgrounds.

“The Establishment Clause does not prevent free exercise or free speech. He did not speak as a school district employee during his 15-second prayer.”

‘He can pray. He may… freely exercise his faith in those moments,” Ferate added.

However, the Kennedy prevailing green light Walters’ current initiatives, such as biblical education and prayer in public schools and the recently announced office?

“It is being misused and misinterpreted and does not support the kinds of things Ryan Walters is trying to do,” argued Alex Luchenitser of Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

Luchenitser said that the Kennedy The ruling had a limited scope. He said the Supreme Court ruled in favor of “private, silent prayer, apart from students when not performing his official duties.”

“Public schools should not be turned into Sunday schools,” Luchenitser claimed.

According to him, Walters is trying to pave the way for teachers to indoctrinate students with religion.

“What we’re seeing is indoctrination from the left to tell students that boys can be girls, that this country is an evil racist country,” Walters said Wednesday.

The state superintendent has previously said the department’s Bible education mandate would emphasize the Bible’s influence on history, art, literature and other related subjects and would not amount to religious indoctrination.

Americans United has supported legal claims against the OSDE Bible Education Guideline and the St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School, which if approved would be the nation’s first religious charter school.
