Who leads England in World Cup qualifying will obviously be a problem for incoming manager Thomas Tuchel to solve.

Interim boss Lee Carsley has shown that Tuchel will have plenty of options all over the park, with an old guard under heavy pressure from those coming through the ranks.: “I think we’ve seen in the past that teams that came through and could win the European Championship had six or seven players. Look at Germany and Spain.

“I think I said before the Greece match that there is a generation that is just used to winning, whether it be World Cup or European Championships. There is a generation that expects to win in an England shirt, that can only happen but be good for the future.”

On whether it is important that a team is not dependent on one player: “I think we have shown that we have so many quality players.

“The biggest challenge is to fit them all in. Players come in and out of form. Lots of good performances tonight and hopefully we see the same at Wembley.”
