UK snow and ice warnings as weather forecast turns colder

As colder Arctic air moves southwards across Britain this weekend, wintry showers will begin in northern Scotland on Sunday afternoon.

The Met Office warns that around 5 to 10cm of snow could fall on higher ground in northern Scotland on Monday morning, with 1 to 3cm of snow possible at lower levels.

Together with the falling temperatures during the night until Monday, this also entails the risk of ice.

The air in the Arctic also tends to be cleaner, so with clear skies on Sunday evening there’s a good chance you’ll see the Leonid meteor shower.

A weather system will move in from the Atlantic Ocean on Monday and this is where there may be some uncertainty in the forecast.

While rain is expected across much of England and Wales, some snow will fall on the northern border of this area. Snow is most likely to fall on higher ground in Northern Ireland, Northern England and Southern Scotland.

Met Office yellow warnings were issued for northern England and southern Scotland on Monday and Tuesday.

Up to 15-20cm of snow may accumulate over the high ground of the Pennines, potentially causing some disruption.

Towns and cities at lower altitudes are also at risk of disruptive snow, perhaps 2-10cm in some places, but this will depend on the precise track of the rain moving across Britain – the severity of the rainfall and the altitude of the country.

Since we are still in mid-November, the ground remains relatively warm and therefore it will be more difficult for snow to settle at low levels.

Snow showers will continue to fall in northern Scotland on Monday and Tuesday.
