NV Energy has issued a Public Safety Outage Management (PSOM) alert for customers in Genoa, South Carson City and Virginia City Highlands due to expected high fire conditions in northern Nevada.

A proactive power outage is possible from Wednesday, November 13 at approximately 10:00 AM and may last until Thursday, November 14 at approximately 9:00 AM. This period includes the duration of the weather conditions and the time it takes for NV Energy crews to check lines and equipment for any damage, vegetation or debris to safely restore power.

NV Energy said: “During a PSOM event, we will proactively turn off power to select customers in high-risk zones to help protect the community and environment from wildfires.” The company emphasized that safety is the top priority and that proactive disruptions are an important measure to defend against wildfires.

The decision to initiate a proactive outage is based on several factors, including weather conditions, vegetation levels, field observations, and guidance from local fire departments and other first responders. All affected customers have been notified via phone, text and email messages.

NV Energy continues to monitor fire conditions and will regularly update affected customers on the status of the outage. The company noted that wind conditions can escalate quickly without notice, but the proactive outage may be canceled if weather conditions improve.
