Jake Paul admits he held back on Mike Tyson: ‘I didn’t want to hurt anyone’

Jake Paul admitted on Friday night after his victory over Mike Tyson that he held back during his fight against the boxing legend because he didn’t want to ‘hurt’ him.

The 58-year-old Tyson gave boxing fans hope that he would still have some gas in the tank during the first two rounds of the eight-round fight, but that hope quickly faded when Tyson started to slow down in the third round.

When asked if he had taken his “foot off the accelerator” at that moment, he replied: Paul confirmed that he did.

“Yeah, definitely. Definitely a little bit. I wanted to give the fans a show, but I didn’t want to hurt someone who didn’t need to be hurt.”

When asked if any of the punches Tyson threw had any impact, Paul simply replied, “No.”

“I tried to give the best fight I could, but when someone is just surviving in the ring, it’s hard to make it exciting. I couldn’t really get him to get me involved.”

During his post-fight interview, Tyson said his return for his first professional fight in almost two decades was not an attempt to prove anything to anyone. It was for him alone.

“I didn’t prove anything to anyone but myself,” Tyson said. “I’m not one of those guys who wants to please the world. I’m just happy with what I can do.”

Tyson’s age – 31 years older than his opponent – was a topic of discussion in the lead-up to the fight and remains a point of contention following Friday’s outcome. But for Paul a win is a win.
