Jake Paul claps back at criticism of the boring Mike Tyson fight

The fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson may go down in history as one of the greatest boxing events of all time, but it will still be remembered for how anticlimactic it was.

Fans struggled to watch the fight on Netflix on Friday and early Saturday due to issues with the streaming service handling traffic for the first live sporting event. And when the bell rang, Tyson looked exactly like a 58-year-old man trying to outdo a 27-year-old. the former world heavyweight champion kept his guard up, biting his gloves and standing for the most part as Paul spun circles around him.

The eight-round fight went the distance, and Paul won by unanimous decision. Fans watching the event, and those who likely paid hundreds, perhaps thousands, to be at AT&T Stadium made “falsified” accusations. Paul’s comments after the fight did not assuage these concerns.

“Yeah, definitely a little bit,” Paul told reporters when asked if he was taking it easy against Tyson, according to MMA Junkie. “I wanted to give the fans a show, but I didn’t want to hurt anyone who didn’t need to be hurt.”

Tyson survived eight two-minute rounds, but he only landed eighteen punches, and Paul kept his distance and fired in when he could. The 14-ounce gloves could have played a role. Fourteen ounce gloves are typically used in sparring, but Paul and Tyson agreed to the stipulation versus the typically used 10 ounce gloves: Tyson used 12 ounce gloves in his 2020 Roy Jones Jr. fight.

Paul may have played a calculated game with the heavier gloves, but that still didn’t eliminate the complaints about a boring fight.

“Thank you to everyone who registered and came. I tried to put on the best fight I could, but when someone is just surviving in the ring, it’s hard to make it exciting,” Paul said. “I couldn’t really get him to engage me or take pictures and do something super cool or whatever. But I don’t care what people have to say. They will always have something to say, and that’s what it is.”

Paul’s manager Nakisa Bidarian also dismissed the criticism, with both emphasizing that Paul now has a career win over Tyson, whose record dropped to 50-7.
