Bruins lose to Blues in extra time after Brayden Schenn’s goal

Brayden Schenn’s goal 2:53 into overtime was whistled by goalkeeper Joonas Korpisalo to give the Blues a 3-2 victory over the Bruins at TD Garden on Saturday afternoon.

The loss, their third in four games (1-1-2), dropped the Bruins to 8-8-3 for the season.

Nathan Walker leveled the score at 2-2 for the Blues midway through the third period. The Bruins failed to advance the ball up the left wall on their own, leaving Radek Faksa behind the goal line for a clean backhand feed into the slot. The approaching Walker stepped into a one-timer and all was level with 10:42 still in regulation.

Trent Frederic, one in a long list of snake-bitten Bruins forwards in the first quarter of the season, scored his first-period goals in the space of 2:38, first connecting with the 1-1 equalizer ( 9:34) and then with the starting signal (12:12).

Newcomer Georgii Merkulov played the starring role in Frederic’s first, providing a clever flick forward after an overhead pass from Charlie McAvoy. Anticipating the feed, Merkulov, parked near the right post, directed a tap pass to the front of the crease which Frederic smashed into for just his second goal of the season (after scoring 18 goals last season).

The point was the first of Merkulov’s career, achieved in his first game this season, the fifth point of his career. He was called up from AHL Providence on Saturday morning, along with fellow forward Riley Tufte.

At five against five the game was played again, Frederic scored his second of the afternoon and provided the 2-1 lead. Parked at the top of Jordan Binnington’s crease, Frederic tapped home one-timer slapper Mason Lohrei, launched from 10-12 feet above the left circle.

In the second period, both teams failed to score a goal. The Bruins were outshot, 20-10, after 40 minutes and had just five shots on net from the 12:12 mark of the first, when Frederic netted the go-ahead goal.

The Saturday before, the Bruins went the entire third period without landing a shot to Ottawa’s Linus Ullmark. Going into the third period against the Blues, that meant they had just ten shots in the final three periods on home ice.

Concerned that his team had become sleepy — and then with only two shots on net during that period — Jim Montgomery called a timeout with 6:17 left in the second period. It was the coach’s attempt to stop the bleeding before it started.

Earlier it looked like the Blues were 2 with a goal from Oskar Sundqvist at 12:34 of the second. But the officiating crew quickly waved it away as Mathieu obstructed Joseph Korpisalo’s chance to defend his net. Joseph was involved in a battle for position with Lohrei, but took away all room for maneuver from Korpisalo. The Bruins’ lead remained at 2-1.
