Montana Grizzlies host live Week 12 vs. Portland State

MISSOULA – The Montana football team will try to avoid back-to-back losses for the first time this year when it plays its final home game of the regular season.

The No. 10 Grizzlies are coming off a 30-14 loss to UC Davis, which dropped their record to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in the Big Sky Conference. They will host a Portland State team better than their record showing of 2-7, 2-4 when they kick off at Washington-Grizzly Stadium on Senior Day on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Foreplay

Montana wins the toss and advances to the second half. Portland State will receive the opening kickoff.

First quarter

Montana starts with Hayden Harris TFL. Portand State takes third after free play while UM jumps offside. On third-and-10 at UM 23, Dante Chachere throws an incomplete pass.

Montana redshirt freshman QB Keali’i Ah Yat gets the start, his first since the non-conference final against Western Carolina. Montana looks to establish the run early. Eli Gillman runs for 6 yards before being dropped for a loss of 2. Griz throws for the first time on third-and-6 and Sawyer Racanelli drops the pass, broken up by Bryson Ross. Three-and-out with a punt for UM.

Portland State controls the ball effectively and marches to the Montana 4-yard line. Viks then tries a trick play with a direct snap to a RB, and Quincy Craig’s pass is intercepted by Jace Klucewich in the end zone. That’s Kluceiwch’s third INT, tied for the Big Sky lead.

QB Keali’i Ah Yat pulls away for Montana’s second drive. He hits Junior Bergen 15 yards on third and sixth. Kanon Panifloff is back this week at left tackle. Griz will have a third-and-2 at the Vikings’ 27-yard line to start the second quarter.

End of first quarter: Portland State 3, Montana 0

Second quarter

With Montana on the 15-yard line, QB Keali’i Ah Yat throws a ball under pressure towards Junior Bergen near the left sideline and Portland State’s Michael Hurst intercepts the pass on the 5-yard line. That’s Ah Yat’s 4th INT in 148 pass attempts this season.

Noah Kaschmitter sacks Dante Chachere, setting up a third-and-14 at the 11-yard line. Montana didn’t get a sack against UC Davis last week. Chachere’s third down pass is undermined. Griz forces a punt, but Drew Deck’s 20-yard return is erased by a holding penalty.

Keali’i Ah Yat is ready for his third drive as he received all of Montana’s snaps at QB. Aaron Fontes drops a third-down pass, the third drop by UM receivers today. Griz throws in an interception for the second time in three drives. Trail PSU 3-0.

Montana jumps offside on third-and-2 at the Portland State 32-yard line and gives Viks the first down. Then on a third-and-1, Dante Chachere keeps the ball and is dropped for losses by Ryan Tirrell and Trevin Gradney. Griz already has four TFLs after six last week against UC Davis.

Keali’i Ah Yat starts his fourth drive with a 10-yard run. Eli Gillman with a 15-yard catch-and-run on one play after Cole Grossman was there to recover a fumble for UM on a dropped backwards pass. A false start erased a long catch by Aaron Fontes. Point.

On third-and-8, Dante Chachere makes a seven-yard run, his longest rush today. Montana safety Ryder Meyer is called for targeting, confirmed by replay review, and he is ejected for the remainder of the game. Tough way to go out on senior day for the Fairfield senior.

On third-and-6, Dante Chachere hits Eric Denham for 11 yards. On the next play, Hank Nuce forces a fumble after Denham catches the ball and Jaxon Lee gets the ball back for Montana on its own 30-yard line.

Montana QB Keali’i Ah Yat runs left, gets tackled and remains on the field. He staggers away. It looked like his lower leg. Logan Fife comes in and gets sacked on third down. The half ends with a Gillman run.

Grizzlies have 120 yards of offensive margin, Vikings 167.

PSU came into this game ranked last in the FCS in total defense and passing defense; third worst in scoring defense; and fourth-worst in rushing defense.

The first time Montana has been shut out in Oregon in the first half since 2019. First half shutout against the FCS team since 2018 in North Dakota.

The first time Montana was eliminated at home in the first half since 2018 against Portland State. Grizzlies trailed 13-0 at halftime, came back to lead 20-19 and lost 22-20 on Cody Williams’ 52-yard walk-off field goal.

Third quarter

QB Logan Fife moves Montana on the first drive of the second half. He scrambles for 11 yards, Eli Gillman runs for 13, Fife 12-yard pass to Racanelli, pass interference on PSU, Fife 20-yard pass to Fontes.

Portland State drives to the 8-yard line towards the north end zone and is called for its first false start. On the next play, Quincy Craig runs for a 13-yard touchdown. 5 plays, 54 yards, 2:20.

Viks has run for 162. Griz came in with teams up to 130.4.

Portland State thinks it recovers the fumble on the kickoff, but remains the Griz’s ball. On the first play, Montana QB Logan Fife almost gets an interception. Griz gets new life again. On the next play, Fife hits Sawyer Racanelli for an 81-yard touchdown. 2 plays, 81 yards, 0:18.

Vikings have run for 185 yards on 38 carries (4.9 yards per carry). Third most rushing yards allowed by Grizzlies in eleven games this season. North Dakota had 243, Eastern Washington had 263.

Montana has 218 yards in the third quarter after 120 in the first half.

Fourth quarter

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Portland State QB Dante Chachere fumbles with the ball, which Andres Lehrmann said was forced. Hayden Harris comes up with the ball for Montana at the Vikings’ 30-yard line. First drive by either team this half that did not end with a score.
