Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama (knee contusion) out against Mavericks

DALLAS – San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama will miss Saturday night’s game against the Dallas Mavericks with a right knee contusion.

Wembanyama was sent off 90 minutes before tip-off.

Acting coach Mitch Johnson said Wembanyama is considered an everyday occurrence.

Wembanyama suffered the injury with 6:41 left in Friday’s loss to the Los Angeles Lakers guarding Anthony Davis as he drove to the basket. Both players hit their right knees during a collision that left Wembanyama falling to the ground and Davis limping for several seconds.

Wembanyama whistled for a foul during the game, immediately dropped out and went to the locker room. Davis, meanwhile, stayed in the game and made one of two free throws. Both players finished the match for their respective teams.

“A little bit confused at the moment,” Wembanyama said of his right knee after Friday’s match. “I took a big blow. It’s just a blow. I haven’t twisted anything. This isn’t a big deal. So if tomorrow is ever terrible, of course I’ll be smart. But I’ll be fine.”

Wembanyama appeared to be bothered as he walked away from his post-game media availability. Spurs initially listed him as questionable on their injury report before ultimately ruling him out.

Wembanyama, the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA draft, scored his 30th career game with 20 points and 10 rebounds in Friday’s loss to the Lakers. In his past four games, the 20-year-old phenom has made 24 three-pointers, which is the most over a four-game span in Spurs history. Wembanyama needed to make four three-pointers against the Mavericks on Saturday to set a franchise record for most over a five-game span.

Wembanyama averaged 22.7 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.7 blocks and 1.3 steals in San Antonio’s first thirteen games.
