UFC 309: Jon Jones will not retire after retaining the heavyweight title against Stipe Miocic

Jon Jones has announced he will not retire just yet after defeating Stipe Miocic on Saturday, November 16, to retain the UFC heavyweight title. Jones finished off Miocic’s challenge via TKO in the closing moments of the third round at Madison Square Garden. This was Jones’ first fight since March 2023, when he had defeated Cyril Gane to win the heavyweight title.

Jones vs Miocic was supposed to take place last year, but an injury would keep the champion on the shelf for a long time. Miocic, on the other hand, had last fought in 2021, when he had lost the heavyweight title to Francis Ngannou.

After the win, Jones first acknowledged Jesus Christ and then noted that he won’t be leaving the octagon just yet. He said he has to do some negotiations with Dana White and then probably give the fans a super fight.

“I’ve decided that maybe I won’t retire. I’m having a conversation with Dana (White). We still have some negotiating to do. If all goes well, maybe we’ll give you guys what you want to see,” Jones said.

Jones has been linked to superfights with Alex Pereira and Tom Aspinall.

How did the battle go?

Jones would start with a few body kicks that seemingly rocked Miocic. The former champion was in a spot when Jones would get him to the mat. Jones began to dominate the Croatian on the floor and began landing some stiff elbows to Miocic’s head as the crowd began to rally behind the current champion.

Miocic was caught by Jones’ stiff elbows and suffered a cut to his face. The 42-year-old would almost be saved at the buzzer at the end of the first round as it was all Jones in the first five minutes.

Miocic would find some momentum in the second round as he would keep the fight off the ground for the most part and he was able to land some punches on Jones. However, ‘Bones’ remained dominant in the second round and seemed to have the title fight completely under control.

The third round saw a slugfest between the two men as they both landed some good shots on each other, but it looked like Jones was still holding onto the lead. Miocic was trying to slowly close out the round and move into the championship round when a spinning kick to the body ended the day for Miocic.

The former champion collapsed to the ground and Jones was dealt the killing blow when the referee intervened to stop the fight and award the victory to the 37-year-old. Jones celebrated the win with a little dance.
