Nebraska basketball hits 20 threes in win over South Dakota

SIOUX FALLS, SD – It was irrelevant from where Nebraska shot at the rim, which opponents were in the area. The Huskers were too hot from three-point range for any outside factor, burying South Dakota under an avalanche of treys in a 113-70 win.

Alexis Markowski saw more than double teams in the post and sprayed the ball out to create open looks from the perimeter. Early in the second quarter, she knocked down a pair of threes as a trailer behind the offense. Allison Weidner connected from the wing. Amiah Hargrove from the top of the key. Kendall Moriarty had enough time to pause in transition, determine there was no Coyote around and knock down a jumper.

The Huskers buried USD with a 27-5 run in the first and second quarters. They finished the first half 12-19 from three-point range, highlighted by an 8-9 stretch. By the end of the evening, NU had reached 20 treys, a season high.

Britt Prince controlled Nebraska’s temperature throughout the game, scoring 23 points on 10-13 shooting, four assists and two steals. She weaved past ball screens and into the teeth of defenses, able to reach anywhere on the floor like a queen on a chessboard. When the defense gave it to her, she got to the rim. Otherwise, she was content with moving up from the mid-range.

She ended the third quarter with a buzzer-beater, then got a bump in the paint and finished an and-one on the first possession of the fourth.

South Dakota cooled off after a hot start from deep, missing six straight three-pointers to end the first quarter after getting the first three, and Nebraska’s advantage in size and physicality helped turn the game around as it heated up from deep. Natalie Potts followed up her own miss twice to finish on the rim in the first quarter, scoring 2 of her 22 points on the night. Nebraska outrebounded South Dakota 41-19.

USD stopped double-teaming Markowski in the second half and she took advantage of the space she didn’t have early in the match. The senior scored with both power and finesse: a smooth turnaround jumper in the middle of the paint, a jump hook from the block in the third quarter on his way to 14 points and five boards.
