Winter storm approaching Sunday, Winter Storm Warning issued

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the Cascades, including the towns of La Pine, Sisters and Sunriver. All mountain passes will be hit with as much as 8 – 15 inches of snow, while lower elevations could see 3 – 5 inches of snow. The snow will start mid-morning on Sunday and linger into the night. There will be some rain at the start of the event, but there will be a transition to snow later in the afternoon as a cold front arrives. Snow will be behind the front, and because the rain arrives before the snow, we could see some icy conditions underneath.

The rain will keep snow totals low compared to what the computer models expect, but that also brings the variable of icy roads. Dangerous travel tomorrow and Monday due to the slippery nature of the roads. Stay alert, especially on less traveled roads that may not have been treated or maintained.

This is a complicated weather pattern as the region will be in the 50s early in the day on Sunday before the front moves through. The warm sector is pushed away by the front around 3 p.m. and then the transition to heavy and wet snow begins. It won’t be a sudden freeze, more of a gradual transition, but icy conditions may still exist.

The snow is expected to continue until Monday.

Stay safe and alert.
