Saints vs. Browns score: Latest updates from New Orleans | Saints

The New Orleans Saints host the Cleveland Browns at noon on Sunday in a game that’s a must-win for either team if they want to salvage the season. You can follow here for the score and live updates.

This marks Darren Rizzi’s second game as the Saints’ head coach after replacing Dennis Allen on an interim basis last week.

This contest will also be a homecoming for Browns QB Jameis Winston, who spent the last four seasons in New Orleans.

The Saints and Browns last played in frigid conditions on Dec. 24, 2022, with New Orleans picking up a 17-10 road victory.

You can follow below for the latest NFL updates from the Caesars Superdome.

UPDATED, 1:46 p.m.: Looking at some halftime stats, and the first thing that jumps out is the play of Derek Carr. He’s 13 of 15 for 167 yards and a touchdown. And that’s after starting with an incompletion, and with a deep ball to Moreau wiped off for a holding call.

Meanwhile, Taysom Hill is doing everything: seven catches, 36 yards; two carries, 9 yards and a TD; 1/2 passing for 18 yards; an interception and a lost fumble.

Second half about to begin. Saints get the ball first.

UPDATED, 1:39 p.m.: Jahri Evans is going into the Saints Ring of Honor, taking a break from his duties as an offensive line assistant. Pretty cool moment as the big JAHRI EVANS | 2006-2016 is revealed and confetti falls on the field.

UPDATED, 1:33 p.m.: First down from Winston to Njoku, who rumbles down to the 18. Browns hurry up and spike the ball with 23 seconds left. Quick-hitter to Jeudy gets out of bounds at the 14 with 18 seconds left.

Because of the spike, it’s now third down. Browns can’t get tackled inbounds here or the clock might run out on them. Winston in shotgun, and he really just throws this one away.

So Hopkins is on for a 32-yard attempt. This one is pushed left again!

But there’s a flag down. Holding on Payton Turner?! How do you get defensive holding on a field goal?

That gives Cleveland a first down, and they could absolutely still score a touchdown here. Offense is back out there. Ball is on the 9. Winston’s pass is batted down at the line. Cam Jordan got his paw on it.

7 seconds left. Browns will try it once more. Broken up in the end zone by Davis, who had a chance at picking that off.

So now with 3 seconds left, we’ll get the field goal try again. Hopkins from 27 yards now. HE MISSED IT AGAIN. He’s pushing everything to the left. Dustin Hopkins is having a horrible, no good, very bad day.

The Saints are up 14-6 at the break.

UPDATED, 1:26 p.m.: We have a delay here for an injury to Browns left tackle Dawand Jones, who is in some real discomfort. We’ve got the cart out and I believe and air cast. So best wishes to Jones, who clearly won’t return today.

A couple of short completions for Winston moves the ball across midfield and out of bounds with 47 seconds left. Cleveland has only one timeout now because of that injury.

Screen pass to Jerome Ford, and it’s set up well. First down to the Saints’ 32, and Cleveland will call its final timeout with 40 seconds left.

UPDATED, 1:20 p.m.: Saints force a third down and have called two of their timeouts to try to get themselves the ball back with some time.

Instead, Winston throws an absolute bullet to Jeudy. That thing had some heat on it, and it’s a big gain, 23 yards out to the 35.

And the Saints call their final timeout. I don’t understand that one — no reason to stop the clock now. Maybe there was a substitution they needed to make? Not sure. But now the objective is to keep Cleveland off the board.

UPDATED, 1:15 p.m.: Out of the timeout, Carr on a slant to Taysom for the first down, but the ball is loose. Browns have it.

That’s turnover No. 2 for Taysom today, and this one takes points off the board.

Still 1:55 left for the Browns, too.

UPDATED, 1:11 p.m.: Third-down completion from Carr on a circus catch by Juwan Johnson to move the Saints into Browns territory.

Next play is a checkdown to Kamara, who bounces off a tackler and then … the play is stopped? He didn’t step out of bounds and looked like he could have gained a few more yards, but the side judge stopped the play. Strange decision.

Now third down, and Carr gets hit on a blitz but finds Dante Pettis for a first down. Good throw under pressure there, and a good drive working here for the Saints.

Couple of plays later, we’ve hit the 2-minute warning. Saints facing third-and-3 from the Cleveland 11.

UPDATED, 1:05 p.m.: Third-and-4, Winston to pass and he’s got lots of time. But now he’s finally under pressure, gets turned around and is gonna go down. Bryan Bresee does the honors, with Granderson right there as well.

So that will force the Browns into a long field goal attempt. Dustin Hopkins from 51 yards. It’s no good. Never had a chance, wide left.

Good hold for the Saints D. They still lead 14-6 with 6:45 left in the second quarter.

UPDATED, 1:00 p.m.: Erik McCoy went into the injury tent after that play. It really is amazing how much better the Saints offense looks with him in there, so this is a major concern.

He does come out and is now on the exercise bike, so maybe he’ll be all right. I legitimately don’t know who the Saints would use as the backup.

Winston with a nice throw to Elijah Moore for a first down to get Cleveland started on its next drive, and now a good catch by tight end Jordan Akins to move the sticks again. Browns are driving.

UPDATED, 12:52 p.m.: Third-and-1 for the Saints. Carr fakes a handoff and rolls left. Short pass to MVS. He’s got a lot of room to run. I mean, a LOT of room to run. He could go all the way. Picks up a couple blocks, and he does go all the way!

What an answer for the Saints after things were going sour for a few minutes. Carr to MVS for 71 yards and a touchdown.

14-6 Saints lead with 12:40 left in the half.

UPDATED, 12:49 p.m.: Good tackle from Jordan Howden on a short completion to force fourth down. Saints will get it back after the Hill interception. Fair catch right at the 20, so New Orleans starts there.

UPDATED, 12:47 p.m.: First quarter comes to an end with Cleveland facing a third-and-9 from its own 36. Browns got off to a good start on this drive with Winston finding Njoku for 17 yards, but on the next play, Carl Granderson tracked down Kadarius Toney for a big loss on a running play.

7-6 Saints after a quarter.

UPDATED, 12:42 p.m.: Big kickoff return from Taysom Hill, who apparently is gonna set a career-high for touches today. That’s a 42-yard return to the 41.

Hill now at QB and throwing deep off play-action for Marquez Valdes-Scantling. MVS falls down and it’s picked off.

Oof. There was some contact there, and the crowd wants a flag, but they’re not gonna get it. Cleveland gets it back.

UPDATED, 12:39 p.m.: Jameis on the run, throws a dart to Jerry Jeudy and hit him on the run. Boy, he might go. Jeudy turning on the jets, and there’s not a Saint in sight who can catch him. Kool-Aid McKinstry got back to the goal line, but there’s also a blocker, and Jeudy prances into the end zone.

That’s an 89-yard touchdown, and now we have an offside call on the PAT. The Browns are gonna go for 2 now with the ball at the 1. Play-action pass from Winston, who’s hit by Cam Jordan and forced to throw it away.

Still, a dream start for the Saints fizzled in a hurry. They still lead 7-6 with 1:52 left in the quarter.

UPDATED, 12:34 p.m.: Completion to Taysom, but he’s stopped short of the sticks. It’s fourth-and-1. Saints line up to go for it. They force the Browns to call timeout, so we’ll see if they change their mind after that.

Nope, Saints still going. Carr rolls right. He’s gonna go deep, and it’s complete to Foster Moreau inside the 10 — but there’s a flag down. Holding on Johnson. Big one there, and now the Saints will have to punt.

Moreau was also hurt on that play. There was some concern, because he went down hard, but he gets up and walks off fairly quickly. Straight to the injury tent.

Hayball’s punt goes out of bounds at the 11, so that’s where Cleveland will start its third drive.

UPDATED, 12:28 p.m.: Little screen pass to Kamara gets the Saints out of their own end with an 18-yard gain out to the 30.

Now Carr hits Hill with another pass for 5, then another for 6 and a first down. Now Taysom at QB, and Carr goes in motion! Whoa. It’s a handoff the other direction to Kamara, who goes around left end for a 9-yard gain.

Oh no. A second-and-1 holding call. Those are killer, and it was on Trevor Penning. so Now second-and-11, but Carr hits Juwan Johnson short, and he rumbles back close to the sticks. It’ll be third-and-1 after all that, and now it’s Carr on a bootleg. First down.

Klint Kubiak is loosening the strings on the playbook this week.

UPDATED, 12:21 p.m.: Big hit from Willie Gay on David Njoku, and it’s gonna draw a personal foul. That’s a tough one for Gay, because it almost seemed like Njoku initiated that contact, although it was definitely helmet-to-helmet.

Anyway, that moves Cleveland near midfield, but after another errant Winston deep ball, it’s third-and-7 from the Browns’ 48. Winston under pressure and misfires again. He hasn’t looked good early throwing downfield.

Saints force another punt. Dante Pettis is the returner. He fair catches and hangs on as a Browns player is blocked right into him. That was actually a pretty good play from Pettis, because he really took a pretty good shot.

UPDATED, 12:13 p.m.: A good drive going for the Saints. It started with a Derek Carr incompletion, but then a big 13-yard run for Alvin Kamara with a couple of nice cuts through the middle. A couple of plays later, Carr on play-action, rolls right and fires to Kevin Austin for 18 yards into the red zone.

Saints trying to cash in on the great field position with the touchdown here. Second down, Taysom Hill at quarterback. It’s an option, he pulls the ball back and is running for the right pylon. He’s got it. Touchdown.

PAT good, and what a start for the Saints, who lead 7-0 after just 5 minutes.

UPDATED, 12:07 p.m.: It seems natural that we’ll see a lot of Nick Chubb today. The Browns running back was a total star at his position, but coming off of ACL surgery, he hasn’t been himself. Still, the Saints’ run defense has struggled, and it might be a “we’ll run it till you can stop it” game.

Sure enough, Cubb opens up with back-to-back 6-yard runs for a Cleveland first down. On the next series, however, Jameis Winston throws incomplete to the sideline and Chubb is bottled up to set up third-and-9.

Winston sees the blitz and fires quickly over the middle to Elijah Moore, but he’s taken down a yard short of the sticks, right at midfield.

Browns are gonna go for it. They need less than a yard. Chubb is completely stuffed and pushed backward. Demario Davis blew that play up.

Great start for the Saints, who take over at the 50.

UPDATED, 12:02 p.m.: We’re getting ready to go here in the Dome. Defensive starters announced this week, with Cam Jordan saved for last (after he had his best game of the season last Sunday).

And the Who Dat chant belongs to Jahri Evans and some of his old Saints teammates, including Drew Brees, on the day Evans will enter the Saints Ring of Honor. Special day for Jahri, and that was a special moment.

Saints will kick off to get this one started.

UPDATED, 10:57 a.m.: Welcome to the Saints live blog for another week. I’m Times-Picayune deputy sports editor Zach Ewing, and I’ll take you through this one with updates, analysis and social media reaction to Saints vs. Browns.

For a game between a 3-7 team and a 2-7 team, this one actually has a lot of intrigue. The Saints are trying to win back-to-back games under interim head coach Darren Rizzi and keep at least some slim hope alive for this season into their bye week.

And then there’s the return of quarterback Jameis Winston, who had a star-crossed tenure in New Orleans — 5-2 start as a starter in 2021, then a season-ending knee injury, a rocky start and benching in 2022 and not really getting another chance to play until his final game here, where he disobeyed coach Dennis Allen and gave a carry to Jamaal Williams out of victory formation in a blowout win over the Falcons.

That’s all background to today, when Winston returns as starter of the Browns, who are having their own struggles this year.

A couple of notes from pregame inactives: Saints center Erik McCoy is back as expected, after missing the last seven-plus games with a groin injury that required surgery; linebacker Pete Werner is also active after being limited all week with a hand injury; linebacker and special-teamer Nephi Sewell is also active for the first time since tearing his ACL late last season.

So the Saints are about as healthy as could be expected (minus, of course, top receivers Chris Olave (concussion) and Rashid Shaheed (knee) and top cornerback Paulson Adebo (broken leg). Olave is the only one of that trio who has a chance to return this season, but that wouldn’t be until late in the year.
