Taylor Sheridan’s hit Western series “Yellowstone” may be coming to an end soon, but the producer’s latest album, “Landman,” could be the show to fill that void.

Landman stars Billy Bob Thornton and tells the dark story of the dangerous oil trade in the boomtowns of West Texas. It is based on the podcast “Boomtown,” which covered the historic oil boom in the Permian Basin.

The first two episodes of the series debuted on Paramount+ on Sunday. Here’s what else you need to know.

Billy Bob Thornton leads the cast and plays Tommy Norris, the rugged and brash oil company executive charged with securing land and mineral rights to keep the oil flowing. Jon Hamm plays his boss Monty Miller.

Ali Larter plays Angela Norris, Tommy’s wife and Demi Moore plays Hamm’s wife Cami. Andy Garcia and Michael Peña will serve as guest stars. “Yellowstone” fans may recognize James Jordan, who appeared as a guest star on the series from 2019 to 2022. “1923” star Michelle Randolph rounds out the cast.

The series follows Norris as he secures land in the boomtowns of West Texas, with the multi-billion dollar oil and gas industry as the backdrop for the series.

Sheridan co-created the series with Texas-based journalist and screenwriter Christian Wallace, who hosted Texas Monthly’s 2019 podcast “Boomtown,” which chronicled the real-life oil boom in the Permian Basin at the time and inspired the premise of ‘ Husbandman.”

At the time, fracking turned the Permian Basin into one of the most fertile oil fields in the world, with the economic boom disrupting a once-quiet part of West Texas.

In an interview with the Daily Beast published Sunday, Thornton said the series offers “a glimpse into that world” and what the people living in it may have experienced.

“What this show is really about is the relationships and how people are affected. People who work in the oil industry and then their immediate family and extended family – how this affects all these people and how it affects you,” he added.

The first two episodes are now available to stream on Paramount+, with new episodes premiering Sunday.
