Chargers lose two key rookies to injury vs. Bengals: Full updates

The LA Chargers got a lot of production out of the 2024 draft class this season. With multiple hits in the seven rounds, the Chargers have started the rebuild under Jim Harbaugh much earlier than expected.

Unfortunately, two of the most impactful rookies to date were shaken up in 2024 Sunday night football against the Cincinnati Bengals. Cornerback Cam Hart and wide receiver Ladd McConkey both suffered injuries in the first quarter and both went into the medical tent.

Ironically, both injuries came on big plays for the rookies. Hart broke up a third-down passing attempt to Tee Higgins before leaving the game. McConkey suffered what appeared to be a shoulder injury after a 20-yard connection with Justin Herbert.

Update: Ladd McConkey returned to the game in the second quarter.

Update: Ladd McConkey went to the Chargers locker room after spending some time in the blue medical tent. McConkey did not return to the start of the ensuing Chargers drive, but was seen wearing his helmet on the sideline.

Update: Cam Hart returned on the third offensive drive of the game for the Bengals after sitting out the entire second drive.

Fellow rookie Tarheeb Still came on for Hart after the injury. Cincinnati drove down and kicked a field goal on the first drive without Hart on the field.

The Chargers can fill McConkey’s role, but won’t be able to match his impact if he misses time. That DJ Chark Jr. is surprisingly inactive further complicates matters for the Bolts. If McConkey is forced to miss snaps, Quentin Johnston and Joshua Palmer will serve as the top two receivers.

Fortunately, McConkey’s injury kept the second Chargers drive of the game from being derailed. One player after the injury, Herbert connected with blocking tight end Will Dissly for a 29-yard touchdown down the seam.
