Officials miss two calls on Charger Drive to end the half against the Bengals

Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson appeared to be irate over a roughing call on Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert late in the first half of Cincinnati’s NFL Week 11 loss on Sunday Night Football at SoFi Stadium.

The NBC broadcast crew of Mike Tirico, Cris Collinsworth and Terry McAulay questioned the call and Hendrickson was livid.

McAulay pointed out that a horse collar is legal when the quarterback is in the pocket.

“After the play, Trey Hendrickson came off and took his helmet off. He was so angry,” NBC play-by-play announcer Mike Tirico said during the broadcast. “Zac Taylor was just trying to tell him to calm down. Frustrated by the phone call, and half. … He was so angry about that phone call.”

Taylor raised his arm in an apparent attempt to calm Hendrickson, and the defensive end knocked him out of the way.

Tirico and rules analyst Terry McAulay agreed that Herbert should have been called for intentional grounding later in the same drive, with a 10-second run-off, and the half should have ended.

The Chargers’ Cameron Dicker kicked a field goal instead, giving Los Angeles a 24-6 halftime lead.

From ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky via Twitter:

Hendrickson, in his ninth NFL season and fifth with the Bengals, had four sacks to lead the NFL with 11 this season in an NFL Week 9 win against the Las Vegas Raiders at Paycor Stadium. He added half a sack in the first half on Sunday night.

Hendrickson was on the injury report during the week due to a neck injury and traveled separately from the team to Los Angeles.

Hendrickson had a career-best 17.5 sacks last season. He has been named a Pro Bowler each of the past three seasons.

Hendrickson suffered a neck injury during the fourth quarter of Cincinnati’s Week 4 game against the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.
