A Napoleon police officer dies by suicide while on duty

NAPOLEON, Ohio (WTVG) – A Napoleon police officer died by suicide in the line of duty Saturday evening, the city’s police chief said.

Chief Edward Legg said around 6:30 p.m. Saturday, his officers went to check on the officer who was on patrol. They found him dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, Legg said.

East Riverview Avenue was closed so authorities could conduct their investigation.

Napoleon police turned the investigation over to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation with assistance from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Legg said.

He asked for privacy for his department and the officer’s family.

“My department would ask the public and the press to give the family and my department the space to deal with this situation at this very difficult time,” Legg said. “We still have a lot to do and the investigation continues. I would appreciate it if we were given the time and space to address these matters.”

The officer’s name has not been released.

If you or someone you know is in trouble, help is available 24/7 from the national Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by texting or calling 988.
