How much snow will fall in New York State this week? Winter weather approaching

Get out the winter gear: Snow could arrive south of Rochester later this week, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo.

With a large, slow-moving storm expected to move across the Great Lakes later this week, rain is expected to flood the region Wednesday and Thursday before possibly turning to snow in some areas Thursday evening through Friday, according to the Weather Service. Higher terrain south of Rochester — including the Bristol Hills area and the Southern Tier — could see the first layer of measurable snow, Weather Service Meteorologist Bob Hamilton said.

“It’s been a long time,” he said.

Rochester is not currently expected to see any snow accumulation, he said, but some flakes could be in the air Thursday through Friday. The storm, he warned, is still several days away, so the forecast could change, as it already has.

How much snow does New York get?

Late last week, the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center forecast a powerful storm that would barrel toward the northeast and bring cold temperatures and possibly some lake-effect snow to New York state later this week.

Currently, the Weather Service is forecasting mostly rain in that time frame for the usual lake effect snow patches south of Lake Ontario, including in Syracuse. The forecast said Buffalo could see some flakes flying Thursday through Sunday.

Parts of the Adirondacks could see several inches of snow Thursday through Friday, Weather Service Meteorologist Steve Welch said, “but there’s still so much uncertainty” about the storm system as it moves, develops and the forecast continues to change.

It’s been a pretty mild November in New York so far. For example, Rochester this week has a forecast normal high in the mid-40s and the daily high temperature so far this month ranges from 46 degrees on November 12 and 13 to a record-breaking 81 degrees on November 5. Highs are forecast to return closer to normal levels – in the low to mid 40s, he said.
