Who is running for the 2025 NJ gubernatorial election?

Although Rep. Mikie Sherrill booked her ticket for a trip back to Congress earlier this month, she will instead continue campaigning, this time for governor.

Sherrill announced Monday that she will run for governor of New Jersey next spring in a crowded Democratic primary. Here are a few things to know about the newest governor hopeful.

Received degrees from Annapolis, London School of Economics, Georgetown

She is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis and has a master’s degree in international and world history from the London School of Economics. She earned a juris doctorate from Georgetown University Law Center.

Flew a helicopter in the Navy

After graduating from the Naval Academy, Sherrill completed flight training and became a helicopter pilot, flying the H-3 Sea King on support missions in Europe and the Middle East.

Worked as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in NJ

Sherrill was an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey, under the direction of U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman.

Won a seat occupied by Rodney Frelinghuysen

In 2018, she won the seat previously held by representative Rodney Frelinghuysen, who announced that he would not be re-elected after twelve terms.

Lives in Essex County

Sherrill lives in Montclair with her four children and her husband, a fellow Navy veteran.
