Impactful storm that shows the flavor of December early

(WSAZ) – A very active week of weather is expected across the WSAZ viewing area. However, today will start quite calmly as we will see only a few clouds, as well as reasonably warm temperatures and calm winds. This is due to the high pressure acting to the east, causing the southerly wind to increase. Unfortunately, clouds will stick around through the afternoon, thanks to a developing low pressure area in the southern plains.

This low will quickly work its way north and east, pushing a warm front through the area tomorrow morning. This front will drive the development of showers in the late morning, while a cold front will drive the development of showers in the early afternoon. This cold front will also allow for the development of a few showers before drier conditions develop Tuesday night. The cold front that arrives on Tuesday will ultimately not have a major impact on the area.

However, some energy will remain in the air on Wednesday, which will encourage the development and establishment of a new area of low pressure over central and eastern Ohio. This will push a new cold front through the area on Wednesday afternoon, with this front having a much greater impact on the area. Gusty showers can be expected along this front, while gusts of 35-40 mph (sustained winds of 15-25 mph) are expected behind the front. Additionally, a shot of the season’s coldest air we’ve seen so far will work. Temperatures are expected to drop below 30 degrees overnight on Wednesday.

By the time we get to Thursday morning, there will be more spokes of energy moving around the low pressure area. A shot of mixed precipitation (with many of us seeing our first snowflakes of the season) is expected during the morning hours, before another shot of widespread snow comes along in the afternoon and evening hours, along with another splash of energy. Little to no snow accumulation is expected in the lowland elevations, but there is certainly a possibility that the mountains will be exposed for an inch or two, especially east of US-19 (Corridor L).

Meanwhile, a very tight pressure gradient will cause very gusty winds. Wind gusts of up to 60 km/h are possible not only on Thursday, but also on Friday. Therefore, make sure that you secure all loose objects and the rubbish bins in your garden from Wednesday to Friday. After the snow clears Friday morning, northwest winds should push some lake- and mountain-driven snow early Saturday before clearing the entire region Saturday afternoon. The possible development of sunshine and warmer temperatures will continue on Sunday.
