‘Wicked’ arrives in theaters with an unprecedented audience score

There has been a lot of controversy surrounding Wicked in the lead up to its release this weekend, from the casting to the press tour to the decision to split itself into two parts. But now? The film arrives in theaters to stunning feedback from those who have already seen it.

Wicked currently has a near-perfect audience score of 99% on Rotten Tomatoes, with 1,000 verified viewers having seen the film in early release territories. If I’ve been following this kind of thing for years, I’ve almost never seen a movie with so many verified reviews that managed to get such a high audience score.

There’s one catch here, and that is that if these people could see the movie early before it even had a wide release, they might just be the kind of Wicked superfans who tended to watch the movie more high scores than the general public. However, as Wicked superfans Doing I love it, that must mean it’s a pretty great adaptation of one of the most beloved musicals of all time.

Currently there is only one positive review for Wicked. As in: it’s the only review, which makes me think it may have broken some sort of embargo that will likely be lifted for other critics in the coming days. We’ll see if these scores match up with this one.

Wicked is poised to be an absolute monster at the box office, with predictions ranging from a $100 to $150 million opening weekend. With a reported budget of $145 million, that would immediately be eclipsed. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to imagine that if the movie is really that good and word of mouth spreads accordingly, Wicked could be on its way to a billion-dollar profit. Only 55 films have ever surpassed that goal, but if something is going to happen this year that isn’t a Pixar movie or Deadpool and Wolverine, it looks like it could easily be Wicked.

It’s rare to see a box office storm in the works to this extent that isn’t some sort of blockbuster superhero movie. It reminds me of last year’s Barbie and Oppenheimer, which delivered numbers far beyond anyone’s expectations. And they didn’t even have these kinds of audience scores. Wicked is poised to be one of the biggest success stories in Hollywood this year, and suddenly it seems like a pretty good idea to split it into two parts to potentially double the massive grosses it’s about to receive.
