Live updates: SpaceX launches Starship test flight 6

SpaceX's Starship spacecraft sits atop its powerful Super Heavy rocket at the company's Boca Chica launch pad near Brownsville, Texas, on Nov. 16.

For years, there appears to be no love lost between SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and the Federal Aviation Administration, which licenses commercial rocket launches.

Musk has repeatedly used

In a September 17 post, he threatened to sue the agency for “overstepping regulations.”

Musk — who was recently tapped by incoming President Donald Trump to lead a new “Department of Government Efficiency” — also posted on September 25 that he thinks FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker “should resign.”

Musk has also claimed that the agency’s activities are “politically motivated” to punish SpaceX.

Musk’s claims came after the FAA proposed $633,009 in civil penalties against SpaceX, saying the company twice violated launch license requirements during flights of its workhorse Falcon 9 rocket.

SpaceX has denied wrongdoing related to these requirements and says none of the allegations are related to public safety. In a Sept. 18 letter, the company said it also gave the FAA advance notice of changes to its launch operations and that the agency failed to act in a timely manner.

Still, the FAA granted SpaceX the long-awaited license to proceed with Starship’s fifth unmanned test launch in October – and that same launch license also applies to this week’s test flight.

It’s the first time SpaceX hasn’t had to go back to the FAA to approve changes to its launch license since the company began this test campaign years ago.
