A synopsis teases: “On the rugged island of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for generations, Hiccup stands out. Hiccup, the inventive but overlooked son of Chief Stoick the Vast, defies centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon. Their unlikely bond reveals the true nature of dragons and challenges the foundations of Viking society.

“With the fierce and ambitious Astrid and the village’s headstrong blacksmith Gobber at his side, Hiccup faces a world torn by fear and misunderstanding.”

The synopsis further adds that an “ancient threat resurfaces” and that “Hiccup’s friendship with Toothless becomes the key to forging a new future.”

Dean DeBlois, the director of the animated film How to train your dragon trilogy, is also directing the live-action adaptation. The three animated films are inspired by those of author Cressida Cowell best-selling book series, which came out in 2010, 2014 and 2019, both earning an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature.

In an interview with Empire, DeBlois said the new film is more charged and intense. “It’s so complicated when it comes to the stakes: there’s a completely believable, photo-real dragon stomping around trying to kill it,” he said.

How to train your dragon is in cinemas from June 13.
