Storms will arrive late Monday ahead of a powerful cold front

A cold front will move into the Capital Area today, bringing a strong line of thunderstorms to the area late tonight. Much cooler air will move into southern Louisiana on Wednesday.

Today and tonight: Monday will start with partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the 60s, becoming mostly cloudy this afternoon with highs in the low 80s. A cold front will approach the area Monday afternoon, sending a few isolated showers and thunderstorms through the area, followed by a main line of widespread storms arriving late tonight.

The line of thunderstorms will move across southern Louisiana tonight. If that happens, there is a threat of damaging winds, possibly a tornado or two, and heavy rain leading to localized flash flooding. Portions of Point Coupee, West Baton Rouge, Iberville, Assumption and St. Mary Parish are listed at a slight (2/5) risk for severe weather, while the rest of the Capital Region, including Baton Rouge, remains at a marginal risk ( 1/5) risk of heavy storms. The entire Capital Region could see 1 to 2 inches of rain this evening, with locally higher amounts. Since this will be primarily a nighttime event, make sure you have a way to receive weather alerts while you sleep!

Next: Conditions will improve quickly Tuesday as the storms and cold front continue eastward. There will be a clearing spell Tuesday and another warm afternoon in the low 80s. The cooler air associated with the front will arrive late Tuesday evening and be felt in the capital Wednesday morning. The second half of the work week consists of cold mornings in the 40s and high temperatures in the 60s. There will also be plenty of sunshine and low humidity. We can finally put on the fall sweaters we’ve been waiting for!
