Waves up to 20 feet high possible on Lake Michigan during storm warning

Wave hunters, grab your cameras and head to the Lake Michigan shoreline.

The National Weather Service predicts waves up to 20 feet high on the Big Lake during a stormy Thursday.

This storm warning was issued today for Wednesday night through Monday. The strongest wave action is expected to occur on Thursday.

The warning is split into two areas: north of Pentwater and south of Pentwater. South of Pentwater you will see the bigger waves of up to six meters high, but the northern area will also see some impressive waves – up to twenty-five metres.

According to NWS, the southern area will see winds of up to 50 miles per hour with precipitation on Thursday. Waves are expected to be 2.5 to 3 meters high, with occasional waves of 13 meters, rising to 12 to 16 meters with occasional waves of 21 meters.

Thursday evening will be a bit calmer with the largest waves reaching around 3 meters. On Friday they were able to build back up to an occasional 18 foot gauge, then up to 13 feet overnight.

From Saturday to Monday the largest waves are up to 3 meters.

For the northern part of the warning, waves are expected to reach 5.5 meters at times on Thursday. On Friday, 12-foot waves were seen at times. After that, waves will calm down to less than 3 meters through Monday.
