Ready to sing along to ‘Wicked’? It doesn’t happen in AMC theaters

Ahem, “bad” moviegoers. There’s no need to flex those vocal cords before heading to the movies this week.

Get out your best pink ensemble. Paint yourself green.

But resist the urge to turn watching the film adaptation of the Broadway musical into a sing-along — at least at the AMC Theaters.

Singing is on the list of no-nos for guests in the theater, according to an advisory shown ahead of the release of Part 1 of the anticipated blockbuster Friday.

“At AMC Theaters, silence is golden,” says the 30-second advisory, which includes scenes from the film. ‘Don’t talk. No texting. No singing. No whining. No flirting. And absolutely no swear words. Enjoy the magic of movies.”

The spot is an example of an occasional policy reminder tailored to a specific film, AMC spokesman Ryan Noonan told The Indianapolis Star, part of the USA TODAY Network.

“AMC has long had a policy that prohibits disruptive behavior,” he said. “The WICKED preshow spot incorporates the themes of the film as a fun, engaging reminder to moviegoers not to disrupt the experience for those around them as they enjoy the show.”

AMC, the world’s largest movie theater chain, has issued fewer bans ahead of the concert films “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” and “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé.”

Guests could sing and dance during those screenings, but they were asked not to dance on the seats or block other guests’ views. For “Renaissance” they were also asked not to shoot the film; advised to remove any parts of their outfits that could block the screen for other customers; and were reminded that masks were banned unless used for health and safety reasons.

Enforcement of the policy may vary from location to location.

“In previous movies, we would have people singing and dancing and it would get loud in there,” said Izzy Stewart, a supervisor at AMC Castleton Square 14 in Indianapolis. “If there’s a little girl singing and stuff, it’s no problem. But if someone is shouting and now everyone can’t hear. … We are lenient when it comes to certain circumstances.”
