Live updates: Gaetz steps down as Trump’s attorney general

The US Capitol in Washington, on Wednesday, November 13.

Nick Begich’s flip of Alaska’s lone House seat will fill Republicans’ slim majority in the House of Representatives — but with some members set to join President-elect Donald Trump’s administration and only three remaining races to be decided, the party could enter the new year with very little room for new elections. wrong.

That slim majority could have a major impact on Capitol Hill — from how House Speaker Mike Johnson handles a looming battle over government funding and the unhappiness of his right flank, to who governors consider appointing to fill vacancies in the Senate – when the new Congress is sworn in in January. 3 and Trump takes office 17 days later.

Two weeks after Election Day, both parties are closely watching a handful of House races in which a winner has not yet been determined. On Wednesday, winners emerged in two of those races: Begich ousted Democratic Rep. Mary Peltola when Alaska finished counting ranked ballots late Wednesday. And hours earlier, final votes in Ohio filled the narrow margin of Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur in the Toledo-based 9th District.

Balance of Power: These results mean that Republicans won 219 seats in the House of Representatives compared to Democrats’ 213, according to CNN’s projections. The undecided races are California’s 13th and 45th districts, where ballots are still being counted, and Iowa’s 1st district, where GOP Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks leads by about 800 votes ahead of a recount.

However, Trump is poaching the Republicans who hold – or until recently held – three of those seats to join his still-forming government. The president-elect could select more Republican House members as he fills the rest of his Cabinet and other administration positions.

So far he has defeated Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz appointed as attorney general, Florida Rep. Michael Waltz as his National Security Advisor and New York Rep. Elise Stefanik as his nominee for U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Gaetz immediately resigned his seat in the House of Representatives and said he would not take his seat in January. Waltz and Stefanik will remain members of the House for the time being.

Their seats, all expected to remain in Republican hands, will be filled through special elections – but it is not yet clear when those elections will take place and when the winners will take their seats in Congress.
